Croque Monsieur/Madame

Ingredients

Bechamel Sauce

  • 2tbsp Unsalted Butter
  • 2tbsp Plain Flour
  • 1 Cup Warm Milk
  • 1 Pinch Nutmeg

Sandwich

  • 4 Think Slices of White Bread
  • Dijon Mustard
  • Sliced Smoked Ham
  • 4oz Gruyere Cheese (grated)

Bechamel Sauce

  • Melt the butter in a small, heavy bottomed pot over a medium-high heat
  • When the butter starts to foam, add the flour and stir continuously for 30secs
  • Add the warm milk and stir until thick and smooth, adding a pinch of nutmeg at the end

Croque Monsieur Sandwich

  • Spread the dijon on one side of each piece of bread
  • Top 2 pieces of bread with the ham and cheese
  • Place remaining 2 pieces of bread on top to complete the sandwich
  • Melt some butter in a large pan and fry each sandwich until lightly brown on both sides
  • Place the sandwiches on a baking tray or grill and top with bechamel sauce and some more grated cheese
  • Grill until golden brown and bubbly

Croque Madame Sandwich

  • For a croque madame add a fried egg on top
Cook bechamel sauce in a small thick bottomed pot, fry sandwiches on a pan and grill under a hot grill.
Make one each of both sexes of sandwich and serve with tea or coffee!
You can substitute the cheese but pick something strong, mature and grillable if you can’t find Gruyere. Ham can be substituted for other meats too.
